WrICE (Writers Immersion and Cultural Exchange)

WrICE is a program of reciprocal cultural exchange and cultural immersion focused on writers and writing.  The WrICE Directors are Associate Professors David Carlin and Francesca Rendle-Short with Penny Johnson and Clare Renner. 

Participating writers and alumni to date include  Ali Cobby Eckermann, Han Yujoo, Rajith Savanadasa, Dicky Senda, Joshua Ip, Lavanya Shanbhogue, Saaro Umar, Gratiagusti Chananya Rompas, Andy Butler, Fiona Murphy, Melissa Lucashenko, Christos Tsiolkas, Maxine Beneba Clarke, Alice Pung, Alvin Pang, Ellen van Neerven, Michele Lee, Eddin Khoo, Bernice Chauly, Robin Hemley, Laurel Fantauzzo, Amarlie Foster, Jennifer Down, Harriet Knight, Suchen Christine Lim, Cate Kennedy, Omar Musa, Nyein Way, Nguyen Bao Chan, Jhoanna Cruz, Xu Xi, Joe Rubbo, Melody Paloma, Laura Stortenbeker, Dai Fan, Eliza Vitri Handayani, Maggie Tiojakin, Lawrence Ypil, Ara Sarafian, Mia Wotherspoon, Peter Clynes, Martin Villanueva, Darryl Delgado, Nha Thuyen, Norman Erikson, Steven Winduo, Jennifer Porter, Else Fitzgerald and Susie Thatcher.

Each year, five Australian Fellowship winners participate in a collaborative residency program with five Asian peers. The most recent WrICE program took place in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in May 2018. Before that was Vigan, the Philippines in January 2017, Yangshuo and Guangzhuo, China in April 2016, Hoi An and Hanoi, Vietnam in January/February 2015, following on from the inaugural WrICE program that took place in Singapore and Penang in February 2014.

Each year, too, the writers reconvene in August for events as part of the Melbourne Writers Festival, as well as Footscray Community Arts Centre.

The first anthology of WrICE writers, The Near and the Far, edited by David Carlin and Francesca Rendle-Short, was published in 2016.
